The Nordic Food & Retail Landscape

The Nordic grocery and retail market is highly consolidated, with a handful of large retail groups dominating each country. These major retailers—ICA Gruppen and Axfood in Sweden, Coop Danmark and Salling Group in Denmark, NorgesGruppen and Coop in Norway, and S Group and Kesko in Finland—control significant market share and manage their own wholesale and import operations.

For international suppliers, the typical path to market involves approaching these retail groups' purchasing and buying departments directly, or partnering with established specialty importers who already have established relationships and distribution networks across the Nordic region.

Specialty and Mediterranean food products represent a growing market segment in Scandinavia, where consumers increasingly seek premium and international offerings. Organic and sustainable products command premium positioning and loyalty, particularly in Sweden and Norway. Additionally, alcohol distribution operates through state-controlled monopolies in Sweden and Norway—a critical consideration for wine, spirits, and beer exporters.

Note for Wine & Spirits Exporters

In Sweden and Norway, alcohol retail is a state monopoly. All alcohol sales must go through Systembolaget (Sweden) and Vinmonopolet (Norway). These are the only legal channels for selling wine, spirits, and beer in these countries. Denmark and Finland have more open markets, but state-owned chains still hold significant share.
